Christmas morning finds dead man on beach in Boca Andicuri with more than 20 kilos cocaine.
ORANJESTAD(AAN): A man fishing from the shore on an outing with family members in Boca Andicuri on early morning found a dead mans corpse on the edge of the water being pounded by the waves.
The fisherman notified family members to contact polis who sent a patrol car out to investigate.
Indeed they found a dead male minus an ear dressed with jeans- black waist cincher and shoe and sockless.
There were no wounds to the head and although it appeared a crime had occurred they prefer to wait on an autopsy.
According to learned information the man was Columbian 25 yrs old with the initials C. A. M. and lived in Sta Cruz of Paradera.
A Honda fit with more than one days things [unsure of this translation part] was seen at the Natural Bridge and perhaps was waiting for another contact according to polis.
The dept of organized crime of the interior had been tracking this man along with the 20 kilos of cocaine found on the man and suspected he would bring it on land.
The fisherman who found the body in the water did not see any strangers in the vicinity.
The road to the beach is a dirt road traversed by polis 4x4 . Ambulance brought Dr Brouwer who pronounced him dead.
The investigation is being conducted to see if foul play played a part in his death or if he drowned.
Authorities later looked by helicopter to see if the victim had been moved by someone to the location where he was found near the natural bridge or if he was moved from his auto stationed near the beach.
Diario send its condolences and will continue to investigate if this case involved drug in the death of this person

ROBBING IN ARUBA...SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT VACATION...
AN ACCOUNT OF A VACATION TURNED BAD--ARUBA'S ROBBERY PROBLEM
Several friends just returned from Marriott Aruba...it was either the Surf or Ocean Club where they own a timeshare and I'm not sure which place it was.
Their friends that they traveled with (also timeshare owners at Marriott Aruba) were robbed from their in room safe not once during their week BUT TWICE.
First time they stole $500 in cash and a digital camera. Police came...very slowly they said, friend lost nearly a day on the beach w/ all the paperwork etc. Marriott reiumbursed (sic) them the cash and camera.
Then IT HAPPENED AGAIN.
This time supposedly there was $1500 in the safe and some other things. Same deal...police, lost day on the beach etc. But Marriott has not settled that robbery with them yet. This has never happened to them in all of their visits previously.
Marriott and police agree that it probably was an "inside" job. And that is all I know. Just posted this for informational purposes. Not bashing Marriott...it could happen anywhere. I love the Marriott. From the sound of it, they handled it approrpiately (sic) and most certainly want to get to the bottom of it as well. (That line sounds very familiar, doesn't it?)
I have no clue how you protect your valuables if you cant lock them in a hotel safe...i guess hide them someplace.

Oduber in New Year’s speech:
‘More tolerance in 2007’
According to Prime Minister Nelson Oduber, 2006 was ‘a productive year’.
ORANJESTAD – Prime Minister Nelson Oduber (MEP) said in his new year’s speech that ‘all citizens of Aruba’ are responsible for themselves, for their family and for their country. He wished that in 2007, everybody treats each other with more solidarity, understanding, and toleration.
“2006 was a very productive year”, said Oduber. He said that his government is a ‘trendsetter’ and he complemented the private sector that according to him, had done everything to contribute to the economic development of Aruba in a positive and constructive manner.
He quoted a few events in 2006, like the celebration of 20 years Status Aparte and 30 years Flag and National Anthem. These are historic facts that make us realize how Aruba has developed herself in the past decade. He also said that it was an honour having welcomed Queen Beatrix to Aruba. He also mentioned the meeting with the Dutch government and the agreements between the two countries to work together on the immigration policy, the finances, and Justice.
FINANCE
He also quoted the bbo that by now is in effect. He considers it a historic moment. The oil refinery that is also going to contribute, the income- and profit tax that is lowered starting this January 1st, the minimum wage that is increased from 1360 to 1460 florins. The idea is to have a balanced budget in 2009; the national debt is then reduced from 46 to 40 percent, and the interest on income from 11 to 6 percent.
BUILDINGS
He mentioned the new buildings that were completed and opened in 2006: the sport complex Frans Figaroa in Noord, the luxurious building of the Aruba General Pension fund in Seroe Blanco, the new Jaburibari sport park, the expansion of the St. Michael Pavilion, the new bus stations that will be opened in 2007 in Oranjestad and San Nicolas, the renovations, investments and expansion of a few big hotels, like Westin, Riu, Allegro, Divi, Holiday Inn and Renaissance, the renovation of the old library in the Winhelminastraat and the buildings Huisje Wild and Ecury in the Schelpstraat. He mentioned the arrival of airline companies Jet Blue and Martinair and the Fitch Ratings that rated Aruba as financially stable in 2006.
Oduber said that the negativism of the opposition in 2006 is an attempt to destabilize the country. He is of the opinion that the social partners and the unions showed little respect by trying to immobilize the country and stop economic development. Also the media tried to harm the government by providing their readers, listeners, and viewers with negative information. He hopes that all the negative statements towards his government will cease in 2007.
He concluded his speech by wishing everybody a happy, healthy, peaceful, and safe 2007.
On 1-3 “Scared Monkeys” blog co-founder “Red” stated to the “Scared Monkeys Radio”
(Thank You and Hat Tip to “Heli”)
Dana:
The story that Scared Monkeys has done such great work with and that I've tried to cover on my program as much as possible too that we've all grown close to the people involved is the Natalee Holloway story. You of anyone knows the ins and outs of this story. Now, we're into 2007. There's been a lot going on in the last little while, the last week was kind of quiet. We've got Dr Phil and lawsuits and Beth and Dave, Jossy Mansur and the kook fringe element that's out there right now, but really we still haven't been able to bring Natalee home.
Let's spend the next few minutes talking about the Natalee Holloway case Red.
Red:
Well Dana it's hard to believe it's coming up to two years on this story. Every time we think and every time Aruba thinks it's going away, it comes back.
Many of the topics, especially with the lawsuits, I heard about that for quite some time and purposely kept quiet about the Deepak and Satish lawsuit that was out there, hoping and praying that these two were stupid enough to go ahead and do it. Hoping and praying that the Dr Phil Show was never going to settle and that was one of the main reasons I kept quiet on that story.
And this kind of falls back on the things that I mentioned with the, not always reporting what we know; we don't want to do damage to a case and in that particular case I knew the minute these kids were foolish enough and greedy enough to file a lawsuit they would in turn expose themselves and that's exactly what we've always wanted (inaudible) with Paulus and Joran van der Sloot in New York and unfortunately that didn't work because of a jurisdictional technicality but guess what, nice going Deepak and Satish decided to create the lawsuit themselves out in California.
Hopefully this will create the platform and the vehicle to be able to get discovery and do all those things Beth and Dave wanted to do in the first lawsuit against Joran in New York City
Dana:
Mike McIntyre who hosts a nationally syndicated program in Canada called Crime and Punishment, we've guested on each other's shows the last few weeks, compared the Holloway case to a case in Mexico where a couple of canadians were killed. It boiled down that both Mike and I agreed that the governments of both Aruba and Mexico are trying their darndest not to look bad in the situations and the island of Aruba continues to shoot itself in the foot over and over and over again. Red, will we ever see anyone stand up in Aruba besides Jossy Mansur and say enough is enough, this was a screw up from the very beginning, we're going to do everything we can to solve it starting right now
Red:
I'm assuming it's the Ianerro case you're referring to up in Canada where the husband and wife were murdered in Mexico at the wedding?
Dana:
Yes
Red:
That case is so very similar to the Natalee Holloway case. I think what's happened here and it's the reason we're still talking about it in 2007 is the stuff that should have been said and should have been put out and put forth in the initial stages of this investigation are now coming out, you know in June and July of 2005 and now in 2007.
Will someone come forward now in 2007 and do the right thing in Aruba? Probably not, not in any overt way. I think what's happening though is the prediction Tom and I made in the beginning of there being a slow leak of what was going to happen and you know. An economy is a large cruise ship and it takes a long, long time to make that turn and once it finally does turn, it takes even longer to come back and they are feeling, you can read it in the newspapers whether it be Diario, Bon Dia or Amigoe down in Aruba, all you hear about is the economy, inflation, tourism down and it's down upon (inaudible) from 2005 and it was down again and... It's really taking an event, I'm sure people are really feeling it, the government is really feeling it and they'll give every excuse in the world that "oh this has to do with bad planning" Aruba never had any of these problems until a girl went missing named Natalee Holloway and they in turn decided to (inaudible) public.
For and island that depends on tourism it has got to be one of the stupidest things and we all just look at it and I'm sure you do as well, that when will these people just come clean and stop the foolishness. You wonder at this point if so many people have put their necks out there and made promises to people, whether anybody can. At some point or another I think it's going to be maybe a person who has said something in the past, maybe a person like Jossy (inaudible)
Dana:
.... You look at the families, you look at Dave Holloway and Beth Holloway Twity, you look at Drew Kesse, one of the nicest gentlemen you'll ever speak with. Look at their drive to bring home their loved one, it just tears me apart, I know it does me every time I talk to these people. Every time we see another story; every time you hear that Tim Miller and his people have gone out to try and find someone. Are we doing enough Red? Can we do more? How do we help the Drew Kesses and Holloways and hundreds of people that are missing out there.
Red:
I think we can always do more. I think a lot of people do a lot of good .

Carnival Destiny says goodbye to
Aruba*
ORANJESTAD – Cruise ship Carnival Destiny moored for the last time in the harbour of Aruba. Businessman René Zaandam regrets the leaving of the cruise ship and organized a ‘mourning day’ as symbolic protest. He called on everybody in the tourist sector to wear a black T-shirt today.
“It’s a very sad day for the economy”, said Zaandam. In his point of view, Aruba looses an important source of income with the leaving of this big cruise ship. He is of the opinion that Tourism-minister, Edison Briesen (MEP) has dropped a big clanger by not doing anything to keep the Carnival Destiny for Aruba. “He knew already, since August of 2005, that the shipping company that owns this cruise ship was planning to stop calling in at the port of Aruba. He pretended in March of 2006 that he knew nothing and in June he said that he would do something. It didn’t help.”
Zaandam calculates the revenue that Aruba misses out on. “Cruise passengers on ships of the caliber of Carnival Destiny spend an average of one-hundred dollars when they are in Aruba. This cruise ship accommodates an average of 2000 passengers, which means a source of income of about 200.000 dollars per week years after years.”
According to Zaandam, the cruise ship company indicated that they can no longer call in at Aruba, due to the high fuel prices. It’s such a pity that the minister had done nothing to eliminate this argument. “Look at the recent development with Valero, for whom the government had fixed an exception so they can pay less bbo. Wasn’t that also possible with Carnival Destiny? The minister could have stipulated that big cruise ships with at least 2000 passengers that call in at Aruba every week, would have the advantage of lower fuel price.” This way, the minister could have procured that big ships with passengers that spend money, continue to call in at Aruba.
Aruba Ports Authority (APA) announced last year November that three new cruise ships will call in at Aruba in 2007. On Amigoe’s question whether these three ships will fill the gap left behind by Carnival Destiny, Zaandam reacted that it’s not the number of ships that is important, but the number of passengers and the amount of money they spend in Aruba. “The new cruise ships have Aruba as pick-up point. Thus their passengers fly to Aruba, arrive late in the afternoon, and leave port in the evening. “These passengers won’t spend money on excursions in Aruba, because they do not want to miss their flight. Besides the passenger on these cruises won’t have that much money to spend like the ones on Carnival Destiny.”
Zaandam stood in the harbour of Oranjestad, dressed in a black T-shirt. He had called on tour operators, bus drivers, taxi drivers, sales persons and owners of souvenir stores, members of shopkeepers’ association Mambo, and everybody that works in the tourist sector of Aruba to mourn the leaving of Carnival Destiny.
A symbolic action, he admits. “By introducing the bbo, this government made it clear that protesting means nothing. They still do what they want and are not concerned about the tourism receiving a blow. This is high season and yet there are days with no cruise ships in the harbour.”
*On May 9, 2006 ARUBAAN’s news-source “Tradewinds Times” reported, “Carnival's decision to scrap Aruba will result in a lost of some 146,000 cruise passenger arrivals on the island annually. Carnival Destiny is one of two cruise ships that visits Aruba year round including the low-season, benefiting commerce in Oranjestad.”

Twittys begin divorce proceedings

Natalee Holloway's stepfather has filed for divorce from her mother, Beth Twitty, according to court documents.
George "Jug" Twitty filed papers in Jefferson County Circuit Court on Dec. 29 citing irreconcilable differences with his wife.
Jug Twitty declined to comment on the divorce procedure. Attempts to reach Beth Twitty for comment were unsuccessful.
The couple received international attention a year and a half ago when Natalee Holloway, then 18, disappeared in Aruba on a trip with fellow graduates from Mountain Brook High School. In the weeks following the teen's disappearance on May 30, 2005, the Twittys appeared side by side on television and at news conferences.
As the case dragged on unsolved and Jug Twitty returned to Birmingham, Beth Twitty remained in Aruba for almost three months. After her return, she founded the International Safe Travels Foundation, leaving her job with the Mountain Brook Schools, and now spends much of her time traveling to speak to high school students.
The couple separated Dec. 15, according to the court filing. In the papers, Jug Twitty claims there's "such a complete incompatibility of temperament that the parties can no longer live together."
The Twittys married July 26, 2000, a second marriage for both.

More Happiness from Aruba … Teens Stabbed, “One Happy Island”
Amigoe is reporting that two teens were stabbed and seriously hurt during a torch-light procession near the Crystal Casino. More actions from a reported “safe” and One Happy Island.
ORANJESTAD – Two teenagers seriously stabbed during torchlight procession. The incident took place near the Crystal Casino. One of the teenagers was stabbed in his chest and in his throat and lost a lot of blood. An ambulance rushed him to the hospital.
The other teenager was stabbed in his stomach and punched one of his lungs. He underwent urgent surgery and his situation is critical. The victims are 17 and 18 years old. The police are investigating the case. There’s no trace of the culprit.
Of course this coming off the foot-heels of yesterdays article in Diario where a man reportedly hanged himself. The article in Diario also shows a picture of the above Amigoe stabbing story as well.
When asked of the crimes and violence I guess the PM must have just said … let them eat bread, expensive bread that is.
Price of bread increased, Amigoe, January 9, 2007
ORANJESTAD – The price of bread went up effective today. The deliberation between the association of bakers and Economic Affairs resulted in the increase of the maximum acceptable price for bread. Depending on the weight, the price of a casino is between 1.11 and 3.75 florins, bbo inclusive; no bbo inclusive, the maximum price is between 1.08 and 3.64 florins.
The ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs placed an ad in the newspapers with the new price for several types of bread. The price increase is the result of negotiations between the association of bakers and economic affairs. The association wanted a price increase for white bread, because they say that with the introduction of the bbo, they can no longer pay the costs. Minister Swaen said that the association has to come with figures that can proof this. The bakeries Huchada, Panaderia Del Pueblo and Bright Bakery presented their figures last Thursday. From these figures it appears that bbo is charged on the transportation of the container, the transportation and delivery of the products to the bakeries, and other companies involved with the process pass on the bbo on the bakers. The association of bakers said that they will take actions if the deliberation does not lead to what the bakers want. One possible action is no longer baking white bread. But that is no longer necessary, because the price of white bread has been increased.

On 1-11 the “Aruban Boycott blogspot” reported:
JORAN AND PAULUS VAN DER SLOOT WERE GIVEN PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT THROUGHOUT THE NATALEE HOLLOWAY INVESTIGATION
Does the Dutch aristocracy in Aruba protect their own from criminal prosecution as a matter of routine? Or is the Natalee Holloway case an exception? It is apparent Joran van der Sloot and his father received preferential treatment from the very beginning of the investigation and are still being afforded special status to this day.
It is a well-known fact that the Lead Investigator assigned to the case, Jan Van der Straten, is a close friend of Joran’s father, Paulus van der Sloot. Minister of Justice Rudy Croes reported many suspicious telephone calls between Jan Van der Straten and Paulus van der Sloot in the very early stages of the investigation.
Jan Van der Straten knew by the first day of Natalee’s reported disappearance that the three main suspects last seen with the teen, Joran van der Sloot and Deepak and Satish Kalpoe, had lied to police about dropping Natalee off at the Holiday Inn. A review of the hotel security tapes by Natalee’s mother revealed that fact. Yet Prosecutor Karin Janssen failed to arrest the three suspects and search their homes, moves she was afforded under Dutch law, as the world witnessed with the arrest of the two innocent, framed security guards. No such arrests were made for 10 more days, and then only the Kalpoe residence was searched – while the van der Sloot apartment wasn’t ordered to be searched for another six days.
Dutch law also states that lying as a witness is a punishable crime, and yet no such charges have ever been brought against these criminals.
Let us not forget that Paulus van der Sloot was a judge-in-training at the time his son was the last person seen with Natalee Holloway. It has recently come to light that a Dutch Judge, Jacob Robert Wit, and a high-ranking justice official, Ben (Voc)King were at the van der Sloot home the day Aruban authorities arrived to search the van der Sloot property. Although the original search warrant was granted for a full search of all the buildings and grounds, Judge Wit changed the order on the spot to limit the search to only Joran’s small apartment.
Those are just some examples of Joran van der Sloot being given preferential treatment by the high-ranking officials of Aruba’s Justice Department and Police department. The interrogation of the suspects was, at best, a softball approach with no follow-up for answers to what is a very puzzling series of lies and contradictions. In some of the interrogations the interviewers were forced to have cameras present which may have been a tactic to limit their effectiveness. Such videotaping of interrogations is not common practice in Aruba, but Joran van der Sloot was afforded this privilege. Who ordered this done?
Listed below are many instances of preferential treatment given to prime suspect Joran van der Sloot during the investigation of the Natalee Holloway case:
1- JORAN VAN DER SLOOT LIES TO POLICE BUT IS NOT ARRESTED
Joran van der Sloot was not arrested for 10 days despite the fact police and justice department officials knew he and the Kalpoe brothers lied about dropping her off at the Holiday Inn.
Prosecutor Karin Janssen and Lead Investigator Jan Van Der Straten knew within 24 hours that the three suspects had lied to them about dropping Natalee off at the Holiday Inn but chose not to treat them as suspects. Jan Van der Straten, according to Paulus van der Sloot, is a "close friend", a blatant conflict of interest by any stretch of the imagination.
2- POLICE ARREST TWO INNOCENT BLACK GUARDS DESPITE KNOWING JORAN VAN DER SLOOT AND THE KALPOES LIED
Instead of arresting Joran and the Kalpoe brothers, the Prosecutor and Aruban police arrested two black security guards based on the lie the three suspects had told. The arrest of the two guards was executed with full knowledge the suspects had lied.
By arresting the two black guards they allowed Joran van der Sloot and the Kalpoe`s five more days to destroy evidence and collaborate on their stories.
3- DUTCH JUDGE BOB WITT HAMPERS THE INVESTIGATION BY NOT ALLOWING A FULL SEARCH OF THE VAN DER SLOOT PROPERTY
Dutch Judge Jacob "Bob" Wit was present at the van der Sloot home on June16th for the specific purpose of denying a search of the van der Sloot main residence and grounds when in fact the original warrant called for a full search. A full search was denied by a Dutch Judge again when Paulus van der Sloot was arrested on June 23rd.
Paulus van der Sloot was a judge in training in the Dutch judicial system and no doubt had many friends who were judges in the system. Any judge who wanted to appear un-biased would have allowed the full property to be searched but Judge Bob Witt limited searching to only Joran's small apartment. It should also be noted that the search of the two black security guards' homes included the entire premises.
4- PAULUS VAN DER SLOOT WAS ALLOWED TO CHANGE HIS SON'S STATEMENT TO POLICE
Paulus van der Sloot was allowed to be present when the Aruban police took Joran's first witness statement and was allowed to edit Joran's statement before it was entered into the public record. That statement is still missing.
Furthermore it was his close friend and Lead Investigator Jan van der Straten who was present for the statement and allowed Paulus van der Sloot to edit his son's statement.
5- PAULUS VAN DER SLOOT HAD ACCESS TO INVESTIGATORS' CASE FILES
Paulus van der Sloot was allowed to read the police records of the investigation by using his access to the Justice department files, allowing him to know exactly what the police and Prosecutor were doing in the case. The Prosecutor should have immediately blocked such access but chose not to.
6- DETECTIVE DENNIS JACOBS, A CLOSE ASSOCIATE OF JAN VAN DER STARTEN, WAS ALLOWED TO CONDUCT JORAN VAN DER SLOOT'S INTERVIEWS
Many of Joran van der Sloot’s statements were taken by officer Dennis Jacobs, a detective who showed no interest in solving the case as witnessed by his apathy toward Dave Holloway during their first meeting. Jacob's first comments to Dave Holloway on June 1st were, "Why would you want to do a search" and "Just go down to Carlos & Charlie's and have a beer, she'll show up."
It should be noted that Dennis Jacobs was a narcotics detective, not a homicide detective, and his choice to conduct interrogation is highly suspect. Jacob's apathy toward solving the case shows clearly in the "softball" manner in which his interviews with Joran were conducted and the lack of follow-up questions.
7- DUTCH JUDGES RELEASE JORAN VAN DER SLOOT AND ALLOWS HIM TO FLEE THE ISLAND WITHOUT GIVING FURTHER TESTIMONY
Judge Smid had originally ruled that Joran should be held another 30 days in detention but faxed in a reversal of his decision immediately after leaving the island and returning to the island of Curacao. Three weeks later a panel of Dutch judges ruled that Joran and the Kalpoe brothers would never have to give further testimony on the case unless it was on a "voluntary" basis despite the fact that the three suspects were telling conflicting stories.
Natalee and her family deserve justice, and we will not let up until they have it.

On 1-12 the “Central Bank of Aruba” claimed: **
Summary of the monthly bulletin of the Central Bank van Aruba
for November 2006*
January 12, 2007
In November 2006, money supply grew by Afl. 17 million or 0.7 percent to Afl. 2,480.5
million. This expansion was the result of an Afl. 100.5 million inflow of funds from abroad, which was partially offset by an Afl. 83.5 million decrease in net domestic assets. Mentioned inflow of funds was largely due to the receipt of the proceeds of a bonds issue on the international capital market by the government and of development funds from the Dutch government amounting to Afl. 91.4 million (US$ 51.1 million) and Afl. 29.3 million (EUR 12.8 million), respectively. Consequently, net foreign assets rose to Afl. 718 million at end-November 2006, which is Afl. 85.3 million or 13.5 percent higher than in the corresponding month a year earlier.
The decline in net domestic assets was caused by an Afl. 91.6 million decrease in net

Ritz Carlton definately not coming to Aruba!
PALM BEACH-Aruba will not receive the luxurious hotel chain Ritz Carlton. The Ministry of General Affairs has decided to terminate negotiations with Ritz Carlton on December 30th 2006. The decision is confirmed by the government spokesperson, Manolo Giel.
A few of the requirements set by Ritz Carlton to construct a hotel on the island were the greatest obstacles for reaching an agreement. Ritz Carlton demanded a tax holiday, that would exempt the hotel from paying all types of taxes. The government is not willing to grant new tax holidays to any hotels on the island, including Ritz Carlton.
The Ritz Carlton was to be constructed north of the Aruba Marriott Resort building, on the last lot left directly on Palm Beach (where Fishermen huts is located). The site is used by locals and windsurfers for recreational purposes. The environmental organization StimaAruba is relieved that the hotel is not coming. It claims that the site should be protected for turtles, locals, as well as for those practising the sport of windsurfing.
Nevertheless the government will continue its pursuit to find a top notch hotel for the site. There are a few parties interested, including Four Seasons and Regency. Now that negotiations with Ritz Carlton have been terminated, the government will begin talks with one of these hotel chains said Manolo Giel.

Memorial Day weekend. Organizers are seeking another Caribbean
destination for this year's festival.
The government has not granted subsidy to have the festival organized
on the island. In previous festivals held in Aruba, the organization
received subsidy of close to $1 million from the government. The subsidy
is now allocated to the organization of Caribbean Marketplace, a large
travel fair for tourism and business agents all across the World, to be held
on the island next week.
The Soul Beach Music Festival was hosted 6 times on the island of Aruba.
The intention of the festival was to entertain tourists during Memorial Day
Weekend. In addition the festival attracted many tourists in a traditionally
slow month for tourism.
This year's edition will be held from May 23rd-28th of 2007. The
organizers will soon announce the destination that will host this year's
festival. The Ministry of Tourism is counting on hosting the popular festival
in Aruba next year.

Search Team on a Mission
Group from Texas started by man who lost his daughter
By RHONDA ROSS
Traveler Staff Writer
Tim Miller, the director and founder of the Texas-based search and rescue team, EquuSearch, commended the Arkansas City police Wednesday morning for their hard work and for asking for help with Jodi Sanderholm's disappearance. His team was instrumental in locating Sanderholm's car at the bottom of the Cowley State Fishing Lake on Tuesday.
"We were using a Hummingbird 5 scan sonar unit and we backed the boat in the water," Miller said. He said that, in less than a minute, before their vehicle was even parked, the search team had a sighting on the (Sanderholm) car on the sonar.
"We sent our diver down there and we marked the vehicle with a magnet and we had a marker on the top," he said. The car was then secured with a cable and, after law enforcement took underwater photos, the car was recovered from the lake, he said.
Miller said he was contacted Monday by Ark City Police Officer Chris Arnett, who informed him of the Sanderholm case and asked if he could help.
"I told him, 'Yes, we'll be there tomorrow. When we get called on a search, we just go. Each case is just as important as the last one, especially when it's a child's case and Jodi's still a child."
Miller said his team was doing a search in Oklahoma for another victim and that case was about a year-and-a-half old.
"Our sonar equipment and divers were in Oklahoma anyway. It was only about a five-hour trip for them to get here," he said.
He and another search member, a former FBI agent, flew up from Texas. He said, now, he felt like they were meant to be here.
Miller acknowledged that he has been "on the other side of the fence" when his own daughter was murdered.
He was referring to the abduction and murder of his 16-year-old daughter, Laura, in 1984. Laura was last seen alive at a convenience store in Texas where she had used the phone to call her boyfriend. It was seventeen "long months," he said, before her remains were found. Her murder remains unsolved. (Additional details of Laura Miller's murder can be found at: www.equusearch.org).
Miller said it was "incredible how a small police department put this case together and worked it."
He said, "Calling in the people they called in, the investigation that they did and how they handled it; it was wonderful working with them."
"I mean, we hate to work these cases, but they did a tremendous job," he said. "This was more than just another case for them. I think (Jodi) became one of their own children in a way, because she was one of the children in their city." He said he knew that Arnett, for one, went several nights with little or no sleep.
Miller has dealt with plenty of law enforcement agencies, beginning with his daughter's murder, he said, and not all are the same.
"So many departments are territorial and they don't want help with anything. This police department (ACPD) cares about their citizens and I wish every police department in the United States was like this one right here," he said.
"I remember the 17 months of total hell I went through, the lonely feelings, the helpless feelings, I didn't know what to do, I couldn't get any help from law enforcement, there weren't any search teams, and I remember when 17 months later my daughter's body was found and she was positively identified, but I felt relief because at least I knew something."
Miller also remembers the day he was with the mother of a 12-year-old girl who was missing.
"I saw that helpless, desperate look on her face and something just snapped in me and I said, 'Oh, my God, that's what I had to have looked like.'"
"At that time, I promised God and I promised Laura that I would never leave another family alone again, if there was anything I could do to help," he said.
Trying to help find Jodi was part of keeping that promise.
"I know that right now, it's hard for the family to realize because, of course, they've got to be in shock, but I'm hoping that one day they can look back at this and feel like they appreciate everybody that was involved, and I know that they do. But right now, they've got to go through the grieving process and they've got a funeral to get through."
He said he's been where they are but it also explains how he came to be involved with EquuSearch.
"The grieving process is long and painful," Miller said, "but I kept following these missing-persons cases and one thing led to another."
In 2000, Miller, a horseman, started a volunteer, mounted search-and-rescue team. Soon, he said people with boats and certified divers wanted to join, and then volunteers with planes and helicopters showed up.
His company is completely funded by donations, fundraising and grants. They have been involved in at least one high-profile case: the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, the still-missing Alabama teen who disappeared in 2005 while on a chaperoned post-graduation trip to Aruba. Miller has been to Aruba twice and plans to return, because he said, "We've got some more sophisticated equipment than we had when we were there before and we want to continue our water search over there."
"None of these cases are over until they're over," he said. "These families become part of our family and we're just grateful that we've been able to help."
What his team does and how they do it is explained in the following profile of Miller and Texas EquuSearch written by Katherine Ramsland, Ph.D., that appears on the Web site, crime library.com:
Many of our members are trained in various rescue and lifesaving skills such as CPR, advanced lifesaving skills and field craft. Our members come from all walks of life. We have business owners, medics, firefighters, housewives, electricians and students on our team. Our resources range from horse-and-rider teams to foot searchers, water (divers, boats) air (planes, helicopters), dog teams (air scent, cadaver and tracking) and 4x4s. We have also utilized infrared cameras in some of our searches.
According to Miller, volunteers generally receive training on the spot, which means they learn how to place evidence markers or flags, as well as how to communicate with search coordinators. In the event they find a body, they're instructed, they should not panic. They're never to approach or touch a found body. In the event they see one, they are to stop immediately and walk backward in their own footprints so as not to further contaminate the scene. (Not all bodies are victims of crime, but each discovery is treated as a potential crime scene.) They must then seek official assistance immediately. Several law enforcement officers participate on the teams, as well as a few forensic scientists, so there are often volunteers who know the protocol, but large-scale searches are comprised of mostly lay volunteers, some of whom may never have seen a body before.
"I was one of the lucky ones," Miller said. "I was able to go through the painful, grieving process and turn my life around. I miss (Laura) every single day and I love her and she can never, ever be replaced. But I can look back and smile, now, and say, 'Laura, you're definitely not in vain.'"
Miller said when your child is missing, you don't want to leave the house for fear that you won't be there to receive crucial information. "Your whole life is at a standstill," he said.
"Every time my phone rang or someone knocked on my door, I literally got heart palpitations."
He said the palpitations went away after Laura's remains were discovered.
This is what compelled him to help the Sanderholm family. He said it's an "overwhelming feeling" when he can help make a difference in a family's life at the "worst possible time in their lives."
"I know this for a fact," he said. "There is one thing worse than having a murdered child, and that is probably knowing that they're dead out there somewhere and never being able to find them and never being able to say, 'goodbye.'" Because of this, he understands the fine line between the public's right to know and law enforcement's need to ensure justice by withholding information.
"As a parent, you want that information out there. You're hoping that someone's going to see something; that the press is going to generate leads. You want your loved one, you want your child, found."
As for the Sanderholm case, Miller said the press did a "wonderful job as well."
"They didn't make any allegations or try to sensationalize this story," he said. "I think everybody was just wonderful in this entire case."
He has great empathy for Jodi's family, he said. "They have an opportunity, if you can call it that, to go ahead and try to put their lives back together, though their lives will never, ever be the same."
w" At least they'll have a chance to go through the grieving process," he said. "When they're (missing persons) never found, you don't get that chance."
Miller said he plans to post Jodi's funeral arrangements on his Web site. He is also planning to fly back to attend the service because he said he hasn't had the opportunity yet to meet Jodi's parents. "It's something I've wanted to do, but the timing wasn't right," he said.
He said he would like to give them a hug and say, "God bless you all."
"I hope we're never needed up here again but, if we are, we will be on the next flight out."

Lost Teen's Mother to Visit NEA
By LeAnn Askins
January 13, 2007
JONESBORO -- The mother of a vanished teen with Northeast Arkansas ties will be in Jonesboro later this month to speak to youths and their families.
Beth Holloway Twitty, mother of Natalee Holloway, will be the speaker of a scholarship fundraiser for the Northeast District Council on Youth Ministries of the United Methodist Church. The event will take place at 2 p.m. on Jan. 28 in the Fowler Center's Riceland Hall on the campus of Arkansas State University.
She will speak on subjects including traveling outside of the United States and how her faith has helped her through the experience of her daughter's disappearance, said Kathy Finch, coordinator of Youth Ministries for the Northeast District. She will also talk about making wise decisions when traveling.
Holloway disappeared while on a senior trip to Aruba in May 2005. Her disappearance has become an international news story.
Finch said the group holds an event each January, and when she leaned Twitty was willing to speak to youths across the country, the group decided she would make a good choice.
They began making plans for Twitty's visit in July.
"We are excited about having her," Finch said.
The NEA District Council on Youth Ministries serves students in grades 9-12. Finch pointed out that those are the ages when students often travel without their parents on school, athletic or church trips. While there are chaperones, students must learn to make wise decisions on their own.
Finch said she knows it could have happened to her own children, recalling a time when she and another chaperone took about 20 teens on a cruise.
"We try to bring something that can be entertaining, but very informative," she said.
And no one knows better than Twitty how youths making wrong decisions can affect families.
"I think they have so much to learn from this lady," Finch said. She added that she believes it could be one of the most beneficial programs that has been brought to youths in the area.
Twitty is herself a United Methodist and is very faith-oriented, the coordinator said. The goal is to help others by sharing her faith and her experiences.
"She wants for her daughter's life not to have been in vain," Finch said.
The program will be led and coordinated by the youths of the council. While the program is aimed at teens, Finch said everyone can benefit from what Twitty has to share.
A former ASU graduate, Twitty has ties to Arkansas and Northeast Arkansas. She is originally from Pine Bluff, and many of her ex-husband's family -- the family of Natalee's father -- still live in the area.
Tickets are $5 per person. For reserved seating, reservations must be made by Thursday. Remaining tickets will be sold at the door. For tickets or more information, call 268-4012 or contact Finch at 633-6273. Checks can also be mailed to P.O. Box 46, Forrest City 72336.
Proceeds benefit the Northeast Arkansas District Scholarship Fund, and members of the Youth Service Fund Task Force will sell items at the event to generate additional funds.

The Natalee Holloway case has caused enormous damage to the economy and tourism of Aruba
(PHOTO here of the “Solo” article written In Papiamentu)
Far be it from anyone saying that Rudy Croes is not quick on the draw. It has only taken nearly 20 months for Rudy Croes to admit the obvious … The Natalee Holloway case has caused enormous damage to the tourism and economy of Aruba.
At least someone has admitted it rather than the ridiculous spin that the Aruba economy is perfectly fine. Let us not forget that Prime Minister Nelson Oduber declared 2006 a productive year in Aruba.
However, let’s just clarify what that statement really means. If Rudy Croes blames the Natalee Holloway case for being the reason why Aruba finds itself in the predicament they are then what caused the case in the first place? The fact that Aruba finds itself still dealing with this issue is because of Aruba. No more no less. All the finger pointing toward the media or Natalee’s family just infuriates people even further.
It was the nepotism and cronyism that caused the damage to Aruba’s economy. Why was this case not handled in the same manner other cases would have been? Why were three suspects last seen with Natalee Holloway treated differently than two black security guards?
The fact of the matter is that we have reported on and followed hundreds of missing person cases that have had similar if not the exact same circumstances as the Natalee Holloway disappearance that have been solved. Some in only a matter of days. Not in Aruba. In essence, Aruban officials need to look no further than themselves as to who is responsible for their economic plight. They can look in the mirror and at three suspects for their woes

APPEAL OF THE PROSECUTION AGAINST PAULUS VAN DER SLOOT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY
ORANJESTAD(AAN) On Monday morning the case that the Prosecution appealed against Paul van der Sloot took place.
Some time back, van der Sloot started a case for damages that he claimed to have suffered, including the job of Judge that he could have had.
The Judge in that case awarded a sum of various thousand guilders to van der Sloot, who is actually working as a lawyer.
The prosecution did not agree with the sentence and decided to go into appeal.
On Monday the case took place, but was treated behind closed doors for the public and the press.
DIARIO tried to contact attorney Arie Swaen, who represents van der Sloot, to obtain more details, but was not able to reach him.
Observing that during certain cases in the Superior Court on Monday, the judges said that they would give a verdict later, this will also probably happen with this case.
Tomorrow DIARIO will give more information regarding this and other cases handled in the Superior Court.

A LETTER TO THE QUEEN
*Here is a great letter to the "Queen Bee" written by Aruban Boycott Contributor, Richard. Great job, Richard!
January 15, 2007
Her Majesty
Queen Beatrix
Noordeinde Palace
Postbus 30412
2500 GK Den Haag
The Netherlands
Her Majesty the Queen:
Your Majesty;
It is reported that Karin Janssen, the chief public prosecutor of Aruba, has left the island upon the expiration of her employment contract and has returned to the Netherlands. This is the same Karin Janssen who, about a year ago, said “fireworks” were imminent in the case of Natalee Holloway, an American who vanished on Aruba on May 30, 2005.
It is not surprising, given Aruba’s litany of promises that turn out to be lies and pledges that are never carried out, that yet another statement by an Aruban official turned out to be empty. After all, Karin Janssen did once say that “we are getting the picture of the puzzle,” and said that it was possible to prosecute a case even in the absence of a body. Unfortunately, neither those statements nor any other have urged Aruba to take action.
I am taking the presumption of writing to urge upon Your Majesty my sincere belief that only determined action by your government now offers a possibility of solving this case.
In 2005, a team of Dutch detectives visited Aruba and said they were certain that Joran van der Sloot knew what happened to Natalee Holloway. In August 2006, Aruba asked your law enforcement authorities to take over the investigation. Dutch agents went to Aruba, collected documents, and returned home. Since then, there has been only silence.
It would be tedious to list all of the evidence that points to the complicity of at least some members of Aruban government and law enforcement personnel in a conspiracy to shield certain persons from prosecution and punishment. Allow me to cite some key items here:
--The lead investigator at the outset of the case, Jan van der Straaten, was a personal friend of Paulus van der Sloot, the father of one of the three main suspects.
--Prosecutor Karin Janssen delayed arresting the three main suspects, the persons last seen with Natalee Holloway, even as two security guards were arrested with no evidence against them other than accusations by the main suspects, who later recanted them.
--Although Dutch law stipulates that lying as a witness is a crime that bears a penalty, the many lies of the three main suspects and of their acquaintances were never prosecuted.
--The van der Sloot home, residence of a key suspect, was not searched for about three weeks, though the homes of the security guard ‘suspects’ were searched upon their arrest.
--When the van der Sloot home finally was searched, Judge Robert Wit, who was there, prohibited Aruban police from executing the terms of their warrant, which allowed a full search of the house and property, limiting the search to Joran van der Sloot’s apartment.
--Paulus van der Sloot was allowed to review and edit his son’s initial statement to police and had access to police files while the belated investigation was proceeding.
--Despite the many contradictions in the testimony of the three main suspects and of their acquaintances, a panel of judges ruled that the three could not be questioned further except on a voluntary basis. A subsequent pledge by Aruban spokesman Steve Cohen that Joran van der Sloot would be re-interrogated was never carried out.
Your Majesty, these are but a few of the issues that have perplexed and angered the American public. More than a year and a half after Natalee Holloway vanished in Aruba, her family remain uninformed as to her fate. Aruba seems indifferent to this injustice.
It is my unpleasant duty further to inform Your Majesty that this month another American tourist has gone missing in the Netherlands Antilles island of Saba. It is reported that officials of that island refused to allow missing-person posters to be displayed, citing fears of an adverse impact on tourism. This case remains unsolved as I write, but the indifference indicated by the island’s stance is highly suggestive of Aruba.
Finally, may I remind Your Majesty that the case of Amy Bradley, an American believed to have been kidnapped in March 1998 from a cruise ship docked at port in Curacao, also is unsolved despite continued reports of sightings of her in apparent situations of duress.
No American now expects honesty, integrity, or impartiality from Aruba’s government. We therefore must implore Your Majesty to ensure that your government will take active measures. It is a source of great disappointment that nothing but silence has been heard from the Dutch investigators, and has led to suspicions that no real action is planned.
Your Majesty is aware of the courage displayed by Lamoral, Count of Egmont, who to his cost defied Spanish tyranny and championed the spirit of liberty. Likewise, the families of Amy Bradley and Natalee Holloway have been pursuing justice, and defying modern tyranny, in an area of the world where Your Majesty wields extensive influence.
May I conclude this letter by beseeching Your Majesty to instruct your government also to defy the tyranny and injustice exemplified by Aruban action and inaction, and to ensure that our two peoples will stand unified in our determination that justice be done.
Respectfully,
Richard

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN, HOST: In May of 2005, Natalee Holloway said goodbye to her mother Beth and headed off for what all expected to be an exciting high school trip to Aruba. Since then no word from Natalee, just daily heartbreak for her family.
Tonight, though, there's some news in the investigation. John Q. Kelly, the lawyer for Natalee Holloway's parents is in New York.
John, where did you sneak off to this past weekend?
JOHN Q. KELLY, ATTORNEY: I paid a visit to Aruba, Greta.
VAN SUSTEREN: Why?
KELLY: I'd gotten a call at the end of the last week from Karin (Janssen)
Janssen, the prosecutor indicating that her term was over, she was going to be leaving the island and going back to Holland as of yesterday, Monday. And, we both thought it would be a good idea if we chat a little bit before she left.
VAN SUSTEREN: Did she want to leave the job?
KELLY: No she had a three-year term and she could have extended up to two years with the blessing of the attorney general, Fernandez Croes, down there and she had made a request in writing, very much wanted to stay there, see this investigation through and she was told her term was going to be halted three years and she'd be returning to Amsterdam and she couldn't see this through.
VAN SUSTEREN: So, she sort of got fired, a little bit?
KELLY: She didn't get fired. They didn't extend her term and she was upset about that. She — and I was glad to hear, wanted to stay on this case and see it to some sort of conclusion and they wouldn't let her.
VAN SUSTEREN: All right, so she wanted to stay on the case if she'd some progress I'm sure she would have been able to stay on the case because no one — you know, loves progress. When you spoke to her, were you satisfied that there was progress?
KELLY: I'm satisfied they're still working on the case. You know, I like dealing with Karin, I think she's been honest and, you know they've team of 10 detectives that are working over in Amsterdam, that have been working for a couple months now, on the case. And I also worked with Dennis Jacobs and the team working in Aruba, for a while, on Monday in addition to talking to Karin for a few hours on Sunday.
So, I mean, we don't have result yet. It's result-oriented business and until I have answers for — about the day, you know, no one's going to be happy, but, you know, I like to see that there's work going on still.
VAN SUSTEREN: Well, I hate to be so sarcastic, but it sounds like you got a lot of new friends. But your new friends aren't exactly — you know, we're a year and a half into this investigation and they don't have any progress.
KELLY: They're working, Greta. You know, I've been critical of the prosecution in the past. I've been critical of the police in the past. But the answers are down there. The only possible prosecution and resolution to this down in Aruba and, you know, anything that helps advance the cause here I'm going to do and at least I have a line of communication down there and I don't want to rock that boat.
VAN SUSTEREN: All right, I understand that. Are they convinced that the three suspects are still — they are still the ones they find — or that they believe are responsible for her disappearance or are they looking other directions?
KELLY: They have looked in other directions. I think they've eliminated a lot of other options and I think the three individuals you're speaking of are the prime suspects, still.
VAN SUSTEREN: So, they remain the prime suspects — Joran van der Sloot, Deepak and Satish Kalpoe, are still the suspects.
KELLY: The prime suspects.
VAN SUSTEREN: One quick question, have you served them with the civil suit in the United States, yet. The — Deepak and Satish.
KELLY: Personal service has not been effected down in Aruba, yet. That'll be done shortly and that's the last step to be taken.
VAN SUSTEREN: All right, so we'll watch that litigation out in California. That'll be huge. Anyway John, thank you.
KELLY: Sure, Greta, bye-bye.

It's been much too long since Natalee Holloway disappeared but the family is still battling everyday to get answers. I hate to use the word closure; closure as I've said many times before on this program is not an option here because this will never be closed but Natalee does deserve to be returned home and the family deserves answers in this case.
We haven't had an update from a family member in a while so I thought I'd bring Dave Holloway on the program tonight to talk about the case and give us any updates that he can. Dave, welcome back to the program
Dave:
Thank you Dana
Dana:
What's been in the media lately, some things that we can't discuss, but some things that we can in particular the fact that Karin Janssen has left the case so to speak and is no longer the prosecuting attorney. Jossy Mansur said that on my program a few weeks ago, it's been reported in the media since then. I'm curious on your thoughts Dave about Karin and the type of job that she's done and have you been given any information about who the new prosecutor will be or have you had any contact with he or she?
Dave:
Well, John spoke with her about a week ago and from what we understand, her contract expired after three years of serving as a prosecutor and she tried to renew that contract to see this case through and the Attorney General refused.
Dana:
Is it because of the Natalee case? Is it because there's been so much media attention? I'm asking you to speculate a little bit here, but it seems funny that someone has gone so long with something and now, all of a sudden they no longer have it. Or is this a case where they actually want a fresh start so to speak?
Dave:
You know, you asked me to speculate Dana and I'm going to do that. I think it's the fact that, you know, this is a results oriented business and she has not had any results in solving the case so if you ask me, I'd say that's why her contract was not renewed. Maybe they'll get someone in who'll have a fresh new look at it plus in the beginning there was some dissension between some of the workers in the prosecutor's office, that may have played a part in it, I'm not sure. I know that there was some in-fighting there in the beginning and you know, as you recall 3 or 4 months into the case we had asked the Attorney General to "let's just start all over" and get the Dutch involved and get a new prosecutor, that's what's been happening throughout the case.
We've seen a Police Chief, all the ranks within the police department have fallen to the wayside and now the prosecutor has as well.
Dana:
One has to wonder when the focus was turned to the security guards and away from the boys initially how much involvement the prosecuting attorney had with that, because that certainly was a downturn as far as the investigation goes.
Dave:
Well Dana, you've been involved in the police arena for some time and it takes a team of people and that's the prosecutor and the police department to see things through and in defense of Karin, she had to put a case together based on what the police department gathered. There's still one individual that bears all the responsibility for the way the case has been going on and that's the lead investigator and he's still on it, so you know, you always turn back to the witness statements from the 31st of Deepak and Satish; On May 31st they gave a statement following Joran's statement and in that statement near the very end they ask the question "Did you drop Joran and Natalee off at the fisherman's hut?" And the answer was "no" and then they proceeded on with implicating these security guards.
And then the following day Beth indicates that Joran's statement was ripped up and by the way Joran's father assisted Joran with his statement from what I understand, sat in on the interview
Dana:
Geeeeez
Dave:
I arrived on Wednesday, June 1 and this same detective, despite what was said in these statements, pretty much had cleared these kids and sent us off "she ran away, go down to the bar, have a beer". All the way up until Dana, I guess 5 or 6 months into the case, he still would not accept that this
Dana:
Are you still there Dave?
Dave:
Yeah, I'm still here
Dana:
I know one of the things we haven't heard about here, I know I've discussed this with you on past shows is the cold case investigation. Is there actually, or was there ever a cold case investigation done or was that just a lot of rhetoric from Aruba?
Dave:
Well, what I think the Dutch are doing, I understand approximately 10 detectives are involved in this case. I wouldn't think it would be full time, you've been a police officer at one time, you handle a bunch of different cases. They indicated that 10 detectives were involved in it and I would think that that would be the size of the office.
It all goes back to the police investigation; your case is only as good as how the police investigated it and that has not been a very good job.
Dana:
Just before I had you on I had Clint van Zandt on this evening and we were talking about investigation and again, the first 48 hours is so important and the first 48 hours of this case was just a nightmare for sure.
I have a few questions from the listeners if I could share those with you.
This comes from a listener who's quoting something from the Birmingham News:
US Representative Bachus said Saturday there were circumstances surrounding the Holloway disappearance that warranted the FBI to be heavily involved. He said the circumstances were very disturbing and formally requested the FBI's involvement. I can't get into it, it's something the family is aware of. There's a recognition that this wasn't simply a teen who wandered off.
Is this something that you can discuss Dave? What was the Representative talking about in terms of the circumstances being disturbing?
Dave:
I think this was a statement made early on, the news media was watching, there was a lot of "did she run off" "was this a homicide" or whatever and the FBI concluded on June 9 or 10 when the brought those boys in that this was a homicide case. I think that's what he was referring to, it was simply not a "we missed our flight" or "I ran away" or whatever, so I think that's what he was meaning by that. In political terms, what he was saying is that this was a serious case.
Dana:
Absolutely, that's what it is. If you're just tuning in, Dave Holloway is with me on the Dana Pretzer Show to talk about developments in the disappearance of his daughter, Natalee.
In the last few weeks I've done programs on people who have gone missing in Mexico and who have been murdered in Mexico and made comparisons to Aruba where you have two governments, one the Aruban government, one the Mexican government, where they're doing whatever they can to put aside any negativity towards their tourist economy to try and make people not afraid to come there.
Mexico is just as dangerous as you can get and I think Aruba falls into that same category Your thoughts on the government's response; are they more interested in protecting the tourist dollar or are they honestly wanting to get answers?
Dave:
You know there was a lot of cross currents during that time Dana; there were parts of the government that were obviously very, very concerned about how this would affect their tourism, in fact rumour got back to me that the worse thing that could happen to Aruba is finding a missing person on Aruba or for instance if they found Natalee's body on Aruba. That would be detrimental to their tourism and a lot of rumours that she ran away (inaudible) move it on to something else, this could not possibly happen to this country, that was the last thing that they wanted that this would be labelled as a homicide.
Dana:
One of the questions that's come forward is that there's been some new searches in caves, are you aware of that Dave?
Dave:
There's always been some sort of searches. People will call us and give tips or say something you know and rather than blow it off, they'll look into it but obviously the searches have not been as they were a year ago. If any searches are going on, it's isolated and you know, that's all I can about that.
Dana:
Have the cold case detectives or anyone in Aruba given you a time line as far as a report or have you been receiving semi regular updates?
Dave:
Dana, I'll just be honest with you, I just met with an individual who had contact with the team, but as far as direct contact with this team, we don't even know who they are. We have not had any direct updates from this cold case detective team.
Dana:
Have the government and the media, I know we've gone over this before but it's a question that keeps popping up, but because Natalee was in Aruba it's difficult, I don't totally buy that. Has the US government helped enough? Could they help more and could the media do more for you Dave?
Dave:
As far as the government goes all they can do is assist in the investigation if they're asked. If Aruba needs any information that's in the United States, they can assist but as far as taking direction action or control or anything like that, you're looking at a situation where you have a sovereign country, in fact you have to notify the government before you come onto the island and obviously not in a legal capacity at that, so really nothing.
Dana:
John Q Kelly as you've mentioned has gone to Aruba and spoken with the aruban authorities most recently. Will he be making any other trips sound or will there be any other information coming out in the next little while?
Dave:
I certainly will not be making any trips; John will be making any trips to Aruba, he'll be making those. He'll be making those trips if any are needed.
Dana:
I can tell you this Dave, that myself, my audience and everyone that's been involved in this case, we sit down every day and hope that you'll get the answers that you deserve and that Natalee will be brought home. Thanks for talking on the program tonight, appreciate it.

On 1-22 the “Scared Monkeys” blog reported:
Binge Drinking and Sniffing … A Major Concern on Aruba so says The Red Cross … Could It Have Played a part?
The Red Cross is concerned with sniffing and binge drinking in Aruba. This is a rather interesting comment coming from the Red Cross in Aruba. One wonders what would possess individuals to binge drink or inhale petrol, glue or paint thinner products. A rather peculiar comment was made by the Red Cross in the below Amigoe article that makes many ponder possible scenarios to why Natalee Holloway went missing.
There were in additions several accidents due to alcohol abuse and sniffing of substances, like alcohol mixed with petrol, especially amongst teenagers, said Greg Peterson, chairman of the Red Cross in Aruba.
This abuse causes aggressiveness and the Red Cross is not happy with this.
We know that the three suspects were drinking at Carlos N’ Charlies. We also know that
Carlos N’ Charlies is infamous for getting its patrons drunk, like HERE, HERE and HERE. We also know that Joran van der Sloot admitted that he bought Natalee Holloway 151 rum. Many had questioned that 151 was a rather strange choice of drink to order a girl. Is it though if there is a culture in Aruba among some teenagers who binge drink and abuse alcohol, especially those that would frequent C&C one to three times a week.
There we bought a “Yard Whiskey Coke”. Such a drink costs U.S. $ 12,-. It is a plastic cup and it comes in different colors. I payed for all three drinks. I got a red cup but I do not remember now what color cups Deepak and Satish got.
When Natalee got onto the bar I thought that she was drunk. I could clearly tell
that Natalee had been drinking. I could smell this from the smell that came out of Natalee’s mouth. I also have to say that when I saw Natalee dancing I also noticed that she had been drinking.
After that Natalee and me walked to another bar that was still open at that time. I asked the bartender two shots of Bacardi 151. I still had the whiskey coke in my hand. Natalee asked me if she should drink the Bacardi 151 in one go. I answered her affirmatively and she answered me that she would do it in two. Natalee said to me that she needed a “chaser” in order to drink the Bacardi. Natalee drank my whiskey coke as a “chaser” and then she drank the Bacardi 151 in two goes. I payed for the two shots of Bacardi 151. (Joran van der Sloot, PROCES-VERBAAL - JORAN 6/9/2005)
One can only imagine what could happen if “sniffing” occurred by those suspected of Natalee’s disappearance that night as the mixture causes aggressiveness. Things to ponder. Now factor in the use of roofies … truly something to think about.
Amigoe, January 22, 2007: Red Cross busy during torchlight parade. Concern about sniffing and binge drinking
Greg Peterson, chairman of the Red Cross, is concerned about alcohol abuse and sniffing during carnival.
ORANJESTAD – The Red Cross was so busy during the torchlight parade on January 6th last, that they call up the population to behave more responsible during the next parades. The binge drinking symptom and sniffing cause many problems.
The Red Cross had 30 volunteers patrolling the route in order to give and call in assistance on site. Three of the volunteers manned the ambulance.
They have assisted as much as 48 people with problems like hyperventilation, low blood sugar level, high blood pressure, and fever during the parade and after.
Of the 48 victims, as much as 10 had serious symptoms of alcohol poisoning. There was also a case of stabbing, and this person had to be rushed to the hospital. The Red Cross calls it remarkable that the aggressiveness of drunks often aims at bystanders and even at relief workers.
SNIFFING
Sniffing is a generic term for gases coming from petrol and glue or thinner products. It is being used to get a short but strong euphoric feeling (be High). It is very dangerous for the health; it hurts the brains; it can cause physical and mental damage that are irreparable; it affects the heart; it causes acute nausea and nose bleeding, liver, lung, and kidney problems. When chronically used, it damages the muscles. It can also cause immediate death by suffocation or heart attack. The symptoms of binge drinking are life threatening for the consumer and for bystanders or the family. It can ruin a special event.
“Let’s act responsible and enjoy together”, says Peterson.

Man accused of stiffing Crime Stoppers still jailed on firearms charge
By John Futty
The Columbus Dispatch
Tuesday, January 23, 2007 12:01 AM
The man who pledged more than a million dollars in reward money to solve some of central Ohio's best-known crimes remains in a federal jail in Philadelphia, nearly eight weeks after his arrest on a firearms charge.
Joe Mammana, who said he rose from a life of crime to a life of crime-fighting philanthropy, pleaded not guilty this month to a charge that he possessed a gun, which is prohibited because he is a convicted felon. His trial is scheduled for Feb. 5.
It is unclear how the criminal case will affect a lawsuit filed against him Nov. 15 by Central Ohio Crime Stoppers. The breach-of-contract suit says that Mammana reneged on a promise to pay reward money in the 2005 kidnapping and slaying of Julie Popovich.
Further complicating matters is an Internal Revenue Service investigation of Mammana, who federal agents say hasn't paid income taxes since 2000.
And at least a half-dozen lawsuits have been filed since August by creditors against Mammana's Philadelphia egg-processing business, Yardley Farms.
The Crime Stoppers claim on a portion of Mammana's money could put the group in competition with creditors as well as the federal government, said Kinsley Nyce, the group's attorney.
"If we get a judgment against him, will we be behind the FBI and the treasury boys?" he said. "A whole bunch of people are suing him."
Mammana, a flamboyant personality who boasted of putting bounties on the heads of criminals, visited central Ohio last year and offered rewards of up to $100,000 in each of more than a dozen homicide and missing-person cases. After an arrest and indictment in the Popovich case, the Crime Stoppers board voted to distribute a combined $31,000 to six tipsters who helped investigators obtain an indictment.
Mammana has since declined to provide the money, saying he pays only for convictions.
Randy Shaffer, whose 27-year-old son's disappearance from a University District bar was among the cases for which Mammana offered a reward, is frustrated by the turn of events.
Mammana "talks really big about wanting to help," Shaffer said. "This really can ruin things. When a guy talks about offering this kind of money and then doesn't pay up, it sets a precedent. … It's very cruel. People like me have suffered enough."
Federal agents were searching Mammana's suburban Philadelphia house Nov. 29 for evidence in the IRS case when they discovered a loaded .357-caliber Ruger revolver in the nightstand of the master bedroom, according to court documents.
Mammana's convictions, for aggravated assault, larceny and possession of drugs with intent to sell, make possession of the firearm a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
A federal magistrate denied bail after prosecutors argued that Mammana is a violent man whose access to "enormous sums of cash" makes him a flight risk.
In addition to his convictions, prosecutors cited the assault on Nov. 19 of Crime Stoppers president Kevin Miles, who was attacked with a baseball bat near his Victorian Village home by a man who warned him to drop the lawsuit. Mammana has denied involvement in the attack.
Federal prosecutors say that Mammana amassed a fortune of $3.2 million "by converting to his personal use and benefit numerous checks" that had been drawn on the accounts of his egg-processing business. They include checks written to the Citizens Crime Commission of the Delaware Valley, the Philadelphia crime-fighting group with which Mammana is most closely associated.
Prosecutors said Mammana created four businesses solely to conceal money diverted from the egg-processing plant.
"It is apparent that what the defendant has been doing these many years is lining his pockets and accumulating luxury cars and a luxury house with the proceeds of his business, all while refusing to report this illicit income to the IRS," prosecutors said in court documents.
A spokesman at the Federal Detention Center said those held in the Philadelphia jail are not available for interviews.

Lampe: ‘Henny Eman is guilty’
ORANJESTAD – Rudy Lampe, party-leader of RED involved himself in the discussion on the role of former-premier Henny Eman in the public project Fondo Desaroyo Nobo San Nicolas. According to Lampe, who was member of the truth-committee that investigated the project due to alleged fraud and corruption, the case is as plain as the nose on your face: Eman is guilty.
Lampe says that Eman’s protest against his summons before the Joint Court of Justice is also an indication that the former premier knows that he is guilty. “If you really know that you are not guilty, you let the case go to court in order to force a verdict.”
The judge decided in this case that five of the six claims were not admissible, a decision that Lampe considers debatable.

US travel rules worry Mexico, Caribbean resorts
MEXICO CITY Beach resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean are fretting about a dip in tourism and some are offering incentives such as free massages as new US security rules kick in requiring US vacationers to travel with their passports.
Concerned about a potential drop in visitors because most US citizens do not own passports, hotels in Jamaica, Aruba, St Lucia, the Bahamas and Anguilla are giving out free local tours, food and drinks credit and car rental vouchers.
The new rules, meant to tighten border security, require US, Mexican and Canadian citizens to present passports when travelling by air to the United States from locations in North, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda.
Until now, US vacationers have not needed passports to head off for beach holidays in Mexico and the Caribbean. A drivers license or other ID was good enough. Mexico and some 12 Caribbean destinations do not normally require valid passports from US visitors, but are affected by the new US rules, which took effect on Tuesday. In the Bahamas, some hotels are offering to reimburse US visitors for the cost of their passports.
Airlines, travel agencies and hotel chains in the United States have blitzed consumers with ads in recent months to remind them to get passports when making vacation plans.
Americans account for half of the tourist market in the Caribbean.
Mexico’s government reckons it could lose up to two per cent of its foreign tourism business this year, equivalent to 318,000 vacationers or around $250-m.

Excerpts of Interest only
Dana:
What's going on in Aruba with the Holloway case and the government trying to protect its own self interest and tourist economy, has not started to become a problem in Mexico in some high profile cases where some canadians have gone down and been killed and the whole story of a government trying to protect its tourism continues.
Has the media done a good job in exposing these types of governments like Aruba for what they really are and that they aren't really the safest places that you think they are?
Garrison:
I'm proud to say that with my sister Stephanie who co-authored the book with Dave, and Dave's ability to articulate to the public what happened to his child, Natalee became the symbol of everybody's child and what happened in Aruba could happen anywhere.
Beth has been going out all over america talking to kids at colleges and I applaud them for doing that and even though people are aware there's still an air of arrogance where people feel that that can never happen to me.
Most definitely Aruba is backtracking right now, they're doing damage control but I can assure you that we will never stop with our message to people. Hopefully there will be a resolution but most definitely you can give away, now one thing that bothers me watching Regis, he's still giving away trips to Aruba. I like Regis, I like his show but you know, it's funny, why is Aruba giving away trips right now on a national tv show and why isn't Regis smart enough to see what they're doing. It's hard to believe that he wouldn't have been following this story.
But most definitely that abuse is still going on in different countries and awareness is everything.
Dana:
You would think that Regis would have followed this story, but that brings me to my next question. A professional broadcaster, a legend in the industry, a man's whose show you've been on several times, Larry King admits he's never been on the internet. I think that he's as prepared and professional as any journalist can be but is it strange today to see a broadcaster like Larry King say he's never used the internet? Is that few and far between
Garrison:
I have a lot of respect for Larry, I've been on his show a few times and I've worked with his people, we'll book some of my people from time to time on his show. In actuality Larry may not be on the internet but he's got a class act there...
Dana:
It's always a pleasure to have Jossy Mansur on my program to get updates on what's been going on in Aruba. Jossy, how are you sir?
Jossy:
Pretty good
Dana:
We got some sad news today, Jamie Skeeters a long time police officer, a person committed to help find Natalee Holloway, a friend of yours and mine, passed away. Your thoughts on that.
Jossy:
We're sure going to miss him in this case. You know he was in Aruba and I met him quite a few times. He was doing his best to try to clear up this mystery about what happened to Natalee and it was quite a shock to me when I heard the news yesterday. I will miss him.
Dana:
Absolutely. It's a shock, it's so sad, I know he has family. Again, our condolences go out to his family and we pay tribute to his long time service as a police officer and someone who cares.
Jossy, just when you think things have gotten strange enough we see an article that the Prime Minister of Aruba has gone to Jack Abramoff who has plead guilty to three counts of corruption; it states he's a lobbyist. The Prime Minister of Aruba goes to Abramoff, pays him and tries to get him to put in a good word with the Congress. Tell us about this crazy story.
Mansur:
It is and we found it extremely strange down here. I don't know where he got that 500,000 gilders from and the $250,000 he paid him in 2004 every six months to do this lobbying work for supposed to be Aruba but from what I read in the congressional record it was about Mr. Nelson Oduber. We questioned his actions (inaudible) because it's normally Holland that does all the foreign relations for the Kingdom of the Netherlands, we're just a member of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. I think he surpassed his authority in that sense.
Dana:
Well $250,000 could have been used to find Natalee Holloway The Prime Minister of Aruba and the country of Aruba have a black mark across them because of the sloppy work that they've done in the Holloway case.
What do you think is their main goal here. Is it strictly a tourist issue or is it about promoting the Prime Minister
Mansur;
It's not about promoting the Prime Minister, because I don't know in what sense that would help tourism. There's so many other things he could have done with that money, for example make some kind of promotional campaign in the US instead of paying this character to do this kind of work.
Dana:
Some American media is reporting what they've called breaking news that Karin Janssen has left the case You reported that on my show 3 weeks ago so it's hardly breaking news however, they can call it what they want. Now that Karin Janssen has left has there been another prosecutor appointed? Who might that be and are they going to be any different when it comes to trying to solve this matter?
Mansur:
They have one person who has come down from Holland in the summer to look over the place, to find a home and all of that but there's nothing official as yet as to her appointment. Her job is still vacant as far as we know. We have other prosecutors in the department, but Karin Janssen is gone and I'm sorry to see her go because she wanted to have this case solved.
There were so many other cases at hand with her, the internal battle with her boss the Attorney General, the problems political influence that the minister wanted to exercise on the department. She had to face a lot of different problems when this case was going on and I'm sorry to see her go.
She's gone back to Holland and she's going to be working on big cases there as a prosecutor. She's quite a professional in that sense.
Dana:
The Kalpoes and the van der Sloot have been very public with their so called attorneys speaking on their behalf. What's been going on in Aruba with the Kalpoes and the van der Sloots We heard that Paulus has appealed his settlement with the government. What can you tell us about that Jossy?
Mansur:
That appeal hasn't come down yet, I don't think he's going to win it either. We're not talking about a lot of money here, just a few thousand gilders I don't know when the case will be resolved; I don't think it will be resolved in his favour either.

AMSTERDAM - The Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) issues work permits to Filipina women despite a recommendation against this from the Dutch embassy in Manila.
The embassy says that the women are applying for permits to work as au pairs in the Netherlands but are actually being rounded up by gangs that traffic women in Europe.
MP for the Socialist Party Jan de Wit concluded this on the basis of the annual report from the embassy.
The annual report shows that the embassy warned the IND about the gang activities. Despite the warnings the IND continues to issue work permits.
De Wit is going to pose questions about the matter to Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin (CDA), responsible for the IND, on Tuesday. The Labour PvdA faction in parliament supports De Wit’s opinion that the IND is indirectly cooperating with human trafficking in this case.

Aruba: (Kalpoes) Who is Trying to Make Money off a missing and Presumed Dead Natalee Holloway?
WHY PIGS GET FAT AND HOGS GET SLAUGHTERED
(SCAN of ARUBAAN’s news-source “BonDia” 1-27 article here )
In discussing the death of Jamie Skeeters, Aruba Bondia makes reference of the $10 million law suit that the Kalpoe brothers brought against The Dr. Phil Show and Jaime Skeeters. Which brings us to the obvious question, who is trying to make money off a missing and most likely deceased Natalee Holloway? Who really thinks that any possible damage to them could be worth $10 million? The question arises, why didn’t they sue the Aruban government as Paulus van der Sloot did for false imprisonment if they are innocent or felt damaged in any way by the circumstances of being accused of Natalee’s disappearance?
Does anyone honestly think that any alleged damage to the Kalpoe’s, who are still prime suspects in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, could ever be $10 million? I think they have watched one too many Dr Evil/Austin Powers movies. Honestly, nothing they would have ever done in their lives would have amounted to them being worth much of anything. However, in the day of the almighty law suit these boys went for the lottery and it will most likely cost them dearly.
The law suit was mentioned in circles behind the scenes for months. Many, present company included, had hoped that Phil McGraw et al would not settle to the ridiculous demands set forth by the Kalpoe’s. As it turned out, they did not and the Kalpoe’s went forth with their law suit for $10 million. In the process they opened themselves up to United States jurisdiction. That in turn led to their being sued by Beth Twitty and Dave Holloway. What do you think is the reason why Joran van der Sloot never pressed his luck with law suits in the US? Jurisdiction that will now hold, thanks to the Kalpoe’s greed for taking the bait. Their ultimate greed will lead to their own prosecution.
Thus leading to the age old adage … “Pigs get fat and hogs get slaughtered”

Caribbean islands' visa policy under fire
January 27, 2007 Edition 1
San Juan - New visa requirements issued by 10 Caribbean islands, allowing them to operate as a single nation hosting the Cricket World Cup (CWC), have prompted criticism and astonishment from European nations.
Visitors would be able to move freely within all the Caribbean countries during the CWC, which is the third largest global sporting event.
The policy will affect a swathe of European countries, including Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and the Scandinavian nations, adding new requirements on their citizens. The elected representatives of those nations as well as travel organisers from non-affected nations have reacted angrily and the European Union has also been alerted.
Berthia Parla, chairwoman of the Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA) in San Juan told Deutsche Presse-Agentur: "This policy damages our tourism industry. We were told far too late about the decisions of the host islands' security agencies."
A travel agency from Sweden has already asked CHA: Are Swedes now considered "cricket hooligans" even though the sport is almost unknown in Scandinavia?
CHA sent letters to different governments and security agencies in the host countries in a bid to have the visa requirements lifted, Parla said.
The World Cup will be hosted by Antigua, Barbados, Grenada, Jamaica, St Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, all of which used to be under British control and are now members of the Caribbean organisation Caricom. The group cites heightened security issues as the reason for the visa and goes into effect on February 1 until May 15. The tournament runs from March 5.
According to reports during a recent tourism conference in Aruba, security agencies in the host nations said they had found it easier to cooperate with larger countries like Germany, Britain, Italy, Spain and France, none of whose residents will require visas.
The Netherlands and Ireland are also exempt. - Sapa-DPA

Smelling Senator Bacchus
I'm reading this article at Scared Monkeys and I can't help but smell Congressman Spencer Bacchus, I don't know why. He had that I just shit my pants look that Anita Van der sloot had in the aftermath of her son's savagery.
That gray face.
The article connects the dots between Oduber and Abramoff, probably because it's an Aruban newspaper report. (Diario)
But how far-fetched would it be if the names Tacopina and Bacchus and Posner were in that article?
All Americans.
From today’s Diario, A base di pago di 500 mil Florin PRUEBA CON SENADOR MERICANO TA ELOGIA NEL ODUBER
Things that make you go hmmm …
Reading through this mornings Diario it came as a peculiar sight to see the name of Jack Abramoff and Aruban Prime Minister Nelson Oduber referenced in the same news article. These days no one wants their name in the same sentence let alone news story as Abramoff. We all know the name Jack Abramoff for the many public corruption cases he has been involved in. On January 3, 2006 disgraced uber power lobbyist Abramoff plead guilty to 3 counts in a corruption probe.
Jack Abramoff, the once-powerful lobbyist at the center of a wide-ranging public corruption investigation, pleaded guilty yesterday to fraud, tax evasion and conspiracy to bribe public officials in a deal that requires him to provide evidence about members of Congress.
The following day, on January 4, he plead guilty to two criminal felony counts in a separate federal court, in Miami, related to his fraudulent dealings with SunCruz Casinos.
A question comes to mind, among many. Why would PM Nelson Oduber need a good word put in for him to American Congressman? To look through the record of Jack Abramoff is like a who’s who of scandal and corruption. Anything this guy touched was suspect. So why did Oduber feel the need to associate with Abramoff? Aruba has been in the eye of the storm with Americans since May 29, 2005 and their PM, according to the Diario article, is doing business with one of the most scandal ridden lobbyists ever. A lobbyist with so many “dark side” connections like Abramoff would be about the last person that one would want to be connected to these days. However, it appears that PM Oduber according to Diario paid Abramoff for his services.
A summary of the Diario article of Abramoff and Oduber is as follows:
What’s involved is that Nelson Oduber, the Prime Minister of Aruba, paid Abramoff over 250 thousand dollars to put in a good word for him in the Congressional records. Oduber’s name was clearly mentioned with regards to that transaction. Since Abramaoff kept himself busy with lobbying work and found himself accused of having committed fraud, corruption and conspiracy, which he admitted to the district attorneys, and is now cooperating in the penal investigation that is going on in the U.S. Since he did the same kind of lobby work for Nelson Oduber with the same senator (Conrad Burns), for the price of 250.000 dollars, the article places emphasis on the fact that Oduber’s name is being mentioned in the sordid Abramoff affair in the U.S.
The paper is asking from where Nelson Oduber obtained the funds to beef himself up in the U.S.? And why was Aruban undeclared money used to pay off a corrupt person in the U.S. to speak well of the Prime Minister. The paper also asks how come Holland can tolerate for a partner of the Kingdom to pull out money from the national budget to invest in acts of bribery.
Then the paper goes on to quote what was written about Nelson Oduber in the Congressional records, and to point out that for this small island it is a very serious matter when the Prime Minister gets himself involved, directly or indirectly, in acts of corruption and bribery just to have some good words about him placed in the records.

Natalee Holloway's Mother Speaks at ASU
(VIDEO available here 1m 52s)
JONESBORO, AR -- The days continue to pass since the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, the teenage girl from Birmingham, Alabama who vanished on her senior trip to the Caribbean island of Aruba. Today, her mother is still searching and holding onto hope that she'll find answers and she's also spreading her message to others. She was in Jonesboro Sunday on the campus of ASU to tell her story and teach young adults about traveling internationally.
"I think what I bring to them is a compelling story and it shows the challenges that we faced in searching for a loved one and I think that they can all see themselves in Natalee's shoes or they could all see themselves as me being their parent," says Beth Holloway Twitty, Natalee's mother.
She is now the President and CEO of the International Safe Travels Foundation, an organization committed to teaching youth about traveling outside the U.S. borders. Her speech Sunday at ASU is just one of many she's given around the country, speaking to over 15,000 high school and college students about international travel.
"The more we can educate ourselves then the safer we can make international travel. What I'm trying to do is just pull something out of Natalee's tragedy and turn it into something positive and reach out to other people," says Twitty.
A big part of her presentation focuses on hope and her faith, what she calls her foundation.
"Still to this day, when I have people see me in an airport or maybe they see me at a venue where I speak, and they tell me that our family is still included in our thoughts and prayers and that is what has sustained us this entire journey," says Twitty.
A journey that to this day is on-going.
"You're always going to remain hopeful that you'll get to the bottom of it or get an answer. Now whether they'll be justice, no we don't really think about that too much anymore. I think we just try to stay focused on is we would still like our original plan from the beginning is get to the bottom of it, what happened and some answers," says Twitty.

Dr. Phil' lawyer denies charges in lawsuit over Natalee Holloway segment
January 30, 2007 (LOS ANGELES) - Two brothers who sued the "Dr. Phil" show for airing a segment about their roles as former suspects in the disappearance of an Alabama teen in Aruba should not be entitled to punitive damages, an attorney for the show said.
Deepak and Satish Kalpoe of Aruba filed the defamation suit in December seeking unspecified damages against talk show host Phillip McGraw, CBS Television Distribution Group and private investigator Jamie Skeeters.
The lawsuit alleges the show altered portions of a secretly recorded conversation between Deepak Kalpoe and Skeeters to "create false, incriminating, and defamatory statements that the plaintiffs engaged in criminal activity against Natalee Holloway."
William Haggerty, an attorney for McGraw and CBS, said in court papers filed Friday in Los Angeles that widespread news reports of the brothers' arrest "mitigate any damages allegedly suffered by them and bars or reduces their right to recover any damages."
Haggerty also denied his clients intentionally misrepresented any fact to the brothers or acted with malicious intent.
An after-hours telephone message left Monday for the attorney representing the brothers was not immediately returned.
Holloway was 18 when she disappeared May 30, 2005, while on a trip to Aruba with classmates from her Alabama high school. She was last seen getting into a car with the brothers and their friend, Joran van der Sloot.
Police spent months searching for the missing teen, but the case did not lead to a criminal trial in Aruba. The brothers have not been charged.
A similar lawsuit filed by Holloway's family against van der Sloot was thrown out this summer.

A place located at the eastern tip of the island in San Nicolaas.
How it got there and who did that, the psychic did not say, but hopes that authorities would take a look at that info.

On 1-31 ARUBAAN’s news-source “Amigoe.com” reported another tourists safety-related issue:
The government does nothing to protect the public health
ORANJESTAD – Aruba is not capable to protect her own people against pollution by a multinational, concluded RED as a result of the answers of minister Booshi Wever (MEP) of Public health, Environment, and Immigration Affairs on their question about the pollution of Valero and the consequences for the public health.
In August of last year RED had asked the minister about the number of cancer cases in San Nicolas. Is the number of cancer cases in San Nicolas more than in the rest of Aruba? Does the oil refinery emit polluted chemicals and are these carcinogenic?
The minister answered that he has no information on how many cases of cancer there is per district. From information obtained from an inquiry conducted by the Public health Department in 2001, the minister concluded that there were about 700 cancer patients in a period of one year. The 700 includes new cases as well as old. But the minister says that the inquiry was not set up to check for inter-regional differences. In order to answer Red’s questions, a specific inquiry has to be conducted
EMISSION
The minister does not have an answer on the emission questions either. He indicated that the Public health Inspections and Environment, together with the Technical Service Inspection meet with Valero every other month to talk about the emissions of the refinery. He also mentioned that an air-monitoring program will start in the beginning of next year (2007, editor). This will be done in phases, due to limited instructions, financial means, and personnel. The minister also quoted the long-range investment program of Valero, with which it wants to lower the company risks and procure an improvement of the environment. Wever concluded that based on the information that several government services have, and the policy, it is clear that a lot is being done to improve the public health and environment.
MENTAL DEFICIENCY
However, RED gives short shrift to Wever’s answers. “The answers are proof of the government’s mental deficiency with regard to Valero. “The government does not investigate the possible pollution of the refinery. The only thing the minister said is that when the wind turns and the smoke blows over San Nicolas, the school children get the day off. It is too sad for words that the government is dealing with the health of the people in this manner.” RED also regrets the fact that the minister does not consider making Valero financially responsible for possible damage and force the refinery to set up a fund to help the cancer patients. Before a fund can be set up, we need to make sure that the people had gotten cancer from pollution coming from Valero, is the minister’s opinion. RED applauds the fact that parties in the Netherlands, like the SP as well as PDR in Aruba, that the have taken up a critical position against Valero. “Especially now that the government does not do anything to protect the Public health”, said RED party leader Rudy Lampe.

OM decides this week on prosecution of minister
ORANJESTAD – The Public Prosecution (OM) will decide this week whether minister Ramon Lee (MEP) will be prosecuted for sexual intimidation. The National Detectives are done with the investigation and the OM is deliberating about a press release on the results of the investigation.
The OM has been promising for some weeks already that they would make the results public, but hadn’t done it yet. According to public prosecutor Dop Kruimel, the results will be announced this week in a press release. Lawyer Biaz of the alleged victim indicated last week that he had a conversation with the OM that told him that he will hear in two weeks whether the OM will prosecute. “That the OM will announce this week what it is going to do with the results of the investigation, is new to me. I hope that we will be informed nicely and that we do not have to hear it from the media.”
If by any chance the OM decides not to prosecute the minister, Biaz will then consider appealing and so force the OM to take Lee before the judge. “I’m just considering it now, because I have not received any information on the investigation. I can only decide on the appeal when I have all the documents in my hands. Besides, it is absurd that I still have not seen any documents since the investigation has started in November.”
